Anytime I hear someone say, “The Blacks” I know they’re about to say the most racists thing I’ve ever heard. I’m not sure how the next person is gonna top this one this one though.

I’ve legitimately considered cancelling my HBO Max subscription because it tries to auto play Maher’s show after Last Week Tonight, and I’ve found no way to mark the show as something I never want on my TV.

        It’s triggering every time.

It’s such a dumb recommendation. “I see you watched an unabashedly progressive video essay show, would you like some center-right trash? They’ve both been tagged as ‘politics’ and ‘talk show’, they’re practically the same thing!”

All of the Last Week Tonight episodes run on YouTube, so if that’s your primary use of HBO/Max/Whatever, it’s an easy cancel.

It’s not, I typically enjoy their programming. However, I only pay for one or two streaming services at any given time, yet I always watch any show I want, from any service, anyway (arrrrr) so 🤷🏻

I always recognized that it sounded off but I didn’t realize why until recently. It’s because it’s dehumanizing. “The blacks/the gays/the Jews” vs “black people/gay people/Jewish people” carries a sense of otherness, or less than. It’s amazing how such a small differnce in verbiage can change the whole tone of a sentence.

Remarkable people, the Blacks. Musical, athletic. Not very good swimmers.

      Tap for spoiler

This is a 30 Rock reference, for the uninitiated.

I used to have a white rat named Whitey, and white people used to have the weirdest reactions to her name, even though I’m also white.

It’s interesting… It’s the same people who will pretend they’re not racist by saying “African American” when a black person is actually present, as if they need to walk on eggshells. Like dude, you can say “black,” just try doing it without all the fucking contempt.

But apparently they can’t, and it always comes out in the way you’re referring to.
