It feels like a lot of the maga hats will die cheering and waving trump flags. I don’t know if that’s historically precedented.
It’s going to be hard to make any fixes when like 30-50% of the country wants hell on earth.
jjjalljs@ttrpg.networkto News@lemmy.world•It hasn’t been this hard for Americans to find work since 202122·1 day agoJob market is brutal, at least for tech. Every job gets 100s of applicants. There’s a lot of AI slop. Offered salaries are down. For some reason, management wants people to go into the office (which is among other problems a pay cut compared to WFH).
I’ve been unemployed since the winter. Had a handful of phone screens. Haven’t made it to a technical round yet.
My old job laid off all but one guy and a contractor.
Honestly, I kind of want to get out of tech but I don’t know what I can do that doesn’t require like a degree or is terrible.
Unemployment runs out soon. Not that the pittance the state gives is enough to live on. I asked what I should do when it runs out and they were like, awkward shrug.
Meanwhile there are billionaires living content lives of luxury.

If you’re pretty smart, imagine being drunk. All the time. Just moderately sloshed. That’s what I think it’s like for an average , kind of stupid , person. Poor memory, surges of emotions, incoherent thought. And they can’t ever sober up.

The words conservatives pick are just to satisfy their emotions. Facts don’t matter. They are like children. Failures of people. They shouldn’t be allowed to make decisions of import.

jjjalljs@ttrpg.networkto Technology@lemmy.world•Companies That Tried to Save Money With AI Are Now Spending a Fortune Hiring People to Fix Its MistakesEnglish20·4 days agoA lot of bosses think developers’ entire job is just churning out code when it’s actually like 50% coding and 50% listening to stakeholders, planning, collaborating with designers, etc.
A lot of leadership is incompetent. In a reasonable, just, world they would not be in these decision making positions.
Verbose blogger Ed Zitron wrote about this. He called them “Business Idiots”: https://www.wheresyoured.at/the-era-of-the-business-idiot/
jjjalljs@ttrpg.networkto Technology@lemmy.world•AI agents wrong ~70% of time: Carnegie Mellon studyEnglish127·4 days agoIt is absolutely stupid, stupid to the tune of “you shouldn’t be a decision maker”, to think an LLM is a better use for “getting a quick intro to an unfamiliar topic” than reading an actual intro on an unfamiliar topic. For most topics, wikipedia is right there, complete with sources. For obscure things, an LLM is just going to lie to you.
As for “looking up facts when you have trouble remembering it”, using the lie machine is a terrible idea. It’s going to say something plausible, and you tautologically are not in a position to verify it. And, as above, you’d be better off finding a reputable source. If I type in “how do i strip whitespace in python?” an LLM could very well say “it’s your_string.strip()”. That’s wrong. Just send me to the fucking official docs.
There are probably edge or special cases, but for general search on the web? LLMs are worse than search.

jjjalljs@ttrpg.networkto A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•As of 30 minutes ago at the time of posting, the NYPD has detained two young Black men after they refused their demands to show ID without explanation or cause.23·5 days agoI got questioned by the police when waiting for the train in New York (state) once. I’m a white guy, though I had really long hair at the time. They came up and said someone had reported someone suspicious. I was like, well, I’m waiting for the train and my friends. They were like someone saw you looking in that car suspiciously. I said, that’s my car. They asked if I had proof so I opened the door with the key.
Then my friend and her shitty little brother showed up. The brother yells “YO YOU GOT MY WEED??”
Luckily the cops realized that was an idiot 13 year old white kid, and they left.
jjjalljs@ttrpg.networkto Games@lemmy.world•Founder of Arkane Studios: "I think Gamepass is an unsustainable model that has been increasingly damaging the industry for a decade"; impacts salesEnglish623·5 days agoGame pass was always going to be bad for consumers, and probably bad for smaller orgs. The problem is people are short sighted and don’t care.
Like with Walmart moving into a neighborhood. People are like oh it’s so much cheaper than the local shops! And then those get priced out of business and Walmart raises prices and lowers salary. People won’t or can’t think ahead

Mostly backend for web development (django most recently), though I’m moderately proficient at react and JavaScript for frontend. Also testing and QA.
I’ve been applying to all of full stack, backend web dev, and test/QA. No bites. Learning more languages might help, but I feel like having 0 years experience in (say) Rust won’t get a lot of traction.
Maybe it’s imposter syndrome but I feel like I’ve always been a sort of middle of the road engineer. Good at some things , bad at others. It feels like with all the layoffs and AI, there’s less room for broadly competent people. There’s just going to be the top tier, fighting and getting paid less.
